The German Government through KfW has supported the Malawi Ministry of Education, Science and Technology with the procurement and distribution of 6.6 million primary education textbooks; 463,000 teacher’s guides; and 350,000 atlases. Overall, 7.4 million books have been procured worth EUR 5.2 million (approximately MWK 4.0 billion).

4.9 million pupils in 5,483  public primary schools will be direct beneficiaries of these textbooks and 62,446 public primary education teachers will be direct beneficiaries of new teacher’s guides. These substantial volumes of brand new primary education textbooks and teachers guides have a powerful potential to greatly improve learning conditions in public primary schools through improvement in the pupil-textbook ratio.

On Tuesday 21 March 2017, the Honourable Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Dr. Emmanuel Fabiano and His Excellency the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, Mr. Juergen Borsch, convened at Kawere Primary School in Dowa for a ceremonial handover event of the new textbooks. Distribution of the books is ongoing and is expected to be concluded by end of April 2017.
