Education is the key to success in life, and teachers make a lasting impact in the lives of their students. To celebrate and appreciate the great achievements made by some outstanding teachers in Malawi, Malawi’s Ministry of Education, Science and Technology in association with German Development Cooperation (through the GIZ Basic Education Program) and UNESCO celebrated World Teachers' Day 2017 on October 5th under the theme "Teaching in Freedom, Empowering Teachers" at Njewa Full Primary School in Lilongwe.

During the event, 68 outstanding teachers from all 34 districts in Malawi were awarded certificates for their achievements in different categories by theMinister for Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Bright Msaka. German Deputy Ambassador Thomas Staiger congratulated the teachers on their excellent performance despite the often challenging work environment.

Basic Education is one of the focal areas of bilateral development cooperation between Germany and Malawi. Germany has been supporting the education sector in Malawi since about 30 years. The current bilateral programme, implemented by GIZ and KfW, aims to support the Ministry of Education in ensuring that the prerequisites for improving quality basic education are in place, by focusing on teacher education, teacher management, infrastructure and learning material, home grown school meals and inclusive education.
