History

On 3 February 1964 a German Consulate was opened in Blantyre, which was transformed into an Embassy on 6 July 1964 (the day Malawi declared its independence). When the Malawian government changed its capital from Blantyre/Zomba to Lilongwe on 1 January 1974, Germany soon started with the construction of a new Embassy building there. The new Chancellery was opened on 12 November 1979.
