Germany and Malawi

Apart from the United Kingdom, Germany is the only European country to be continuously represented in Malawi at ambassador level since the country gained its independence. In the early 1990s, Germany helped to bring about Malawi’s peaceful transition from a repressive one-party regime to a multi-party system based on democratic principles. Along with other important donors, it suspended development cooperation, engaged in critical dialogue on human rights and democratization and supported the democratic opposition and the democratization process. Political relations between the two countries are close and friendly. Policy dialogue with the host government and development cooperation are the cornerstones of our bilateral relations .
