The German Embasssy donated basketballs and footballs to the Kamuzu Institute of Sports in order to support the various sports programmes offered to the youth of Lilongwe.

The Institute, which is run by the Malawi National Council of Sports, has been struggling in recent years and has not been receiving the funding necessary to maintain a modern and functional feel. Despite these constraints, many volunteers train both boys and girls in football, basketball, judo, athletics and other sports.

During his visit to Kamuzu Institute on 19 February 2015 Johannes Scharlau, representative of the German Embassy, commended the coaches for their efforts and stressed that fact that also in German sports the vast majority of sports coaches are unpaid volunteers who are sacrificing their time for the love of sports. The Embassy hopes that the Malawi National Council of Sports will be able to upgrade the facilities and change the Institute into a modern sporting facility in the future.
