On 18.11.2016, the German Embassy handed over 20 beach volleyballs to the Volleyball Association of Malawi (VAM). The donation is part of the International Sports Promotion program of the German Foreign Office. Earlier this year, VAM Northern Region representative and volleyball coach Mr Jairos Nkhoma took part in a 5 months coaching course in Leipzig/Germany, which was organized by the University of Leipzig and sponsored by the German government.
Although volleyball is a popular sport in both Malawi and Germany, it can be tricky to start a game, as one requires 12 players and depends on the availability of a court. Here is where beach volleyball is the easier alternative: two players each side, a ball and a net is all that is needed - and Lake Malawi provides plenty of sandy beaches for a perfect game. The donated beach volleyballs will be used by VAM to improve the beach volleyball skills of its members, and hopefully Jairos Nkhoma’s newly acquired coaching skills will be put to good use as well.
