Malawi’s relations with Germany date back to the Day of Independence. Since then we have enjoyed a long tradition of amicable relations between our two countries. Since then the German embassy has been and will remain a symbol and centre for Germany’s engagement. Our political cooperation is based on trust - a capital that needs permanent care in combination with an open exchange of positions. Our political leaders met in 2010 on the occasion of the state visit of the late President Mutharika to Germany, a highlight of our bilateral relations.

Since 1964 Malawi has been a partner country for German Development Cooperation. Germany and Malawi are committed to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) which 190 Heads of States agreed upon in the year 2000 in the Millennium Declaration. A life free of poverty, fear and ecological degredation. The priority areas of cooperation agreed between the two governments are health, primary education and democratic decentralisation. The total volume of bilateral development aid to Malawi to date amounts to approximately 824 million Euro. Germany is committed to continue to support Malawi. The Embassy enhances political and civil society contacts as well as focuses on economic and cultural cooperation. Please check regularly on events happening with the support of the German Mission.

When visiting the German Embassy you will see next to the German and the European flag as well the French flag flying in the wind. This is not just a symbol of the German-French friendship but at our representation you will find as well the Mission of France.

Malawi as member of the United Nations is a multilateral player of equal importance as any other of the 193 member states of the UN. Climate change, food security, biodiversity, international financial architecture -- all these topics need multilaterally coordinated approaches. Germany appreciates the cooperation and believes in a partnership on equal terms. As partners, we can achieve more than individually.
